Environmental Responsibility

At TMMI, we’re committed to environmental sustainability—reducing, reusing and recycling wherever possible. Respect is a pillar of the Toyota Way; not only respect for each other, but respect for our environment as well. Here are just a few of the initiatives that we implement to ensure pollution prevention and ensure the safety of our Team Members and the community at large.

As part of our environmental commitment, TMMI has implemented several water-saving processes to dramatically reduce usage during the painting process—saving the equivalent of the annual usage of 137 households. Water that was previously sent to waste is now captured and reused, reducing our water footprint.

In May 2005, TMMI began a multi-year project that called for planting native species of trees on 228 acres of our property. Over the course of 5 phases, TMMI has planted 130,900 native Indiana trees, increasing the wildlife and biodiversity on-site. The area has become a thriving habitat for animals such as white-tailed deer, red-tailed hawks, and several migratory birds. Red-tailed hawks have been nesting on TMMI property for over 5 years now and are a constant presence around the site that improve the biodiversity of the surrounding community. In 10 years, when the trees reach their peak, they will be capturing and storing 2,170 tons of CO2 from the air annually.*

*This estimate is based on a methodology used by U.S. EPA in its Greenhouse Gas Equivalency Calculator, where it is assumed that it takes about 10 years for a tree to reach its full potential for sequestering carbon.

ISO 14001 certification verifies that TMMI not only has a formal environmental policy but also a management system designed to track environmental performance and established mechanisms for continuous improvement. Under this voluntary international standard for environmental management, audits are performed regularly to ensure that the necessary criteria are being met to maintain the certification, not only internally, but by an independent third party as well. TMMI has been ISO14001 certified since 1999 and continues to be an environmental leader. When it comes to the environment, actions speak louder than words. So, every Team Member is required to understand our Toyota Environmental Policy and to put its principles to practice. To keep environmental responsibility at the forefront of thought and action, we created the acronym LEAF, in honor of our Afforestation efforts: Looking Forward, Environmental Compliance, Achievement, Fresh Ideas. All Team Members live up to LEAF every day. One visible sign: our plants send zero waste to landfill — everything is reused or recycled!
